There you were, driving somewhere as usual, when suddenly the road starts to turn. Left, Right, crest, dip, turn and twist. Blood pressure rises, and your right foot gets a bit heavier, one second to the next. The trees clear and you find yourself driving into some manner of godliness encased into a stretch of asphalt.

And for a split second, that road was yours...

The Alpine Way in The Snowy Mountains, Australia.

Kinja'd!!!

It is a well maintained 128km road that winds around the ski fields. During the off season it is nearly empty, and absolutely amazing. In that 78 mile stretch I saw a total of 2 vehicles.

I've driven some pretty nice roads in 3 continents, but this is right up there.

This road, the San Bernardino pass in Switzerland, is the best I've ever ridden. I was there last summer. I don't know if it's the best driving road, but it was a very impressive one that I'd advise everyone who's in the area to try. Added bonus is that there were very few tourists compared to the many other passes I drove in the Alps.

Highway 32 between Chico and Chester. There's about 20 miles of it closer to the highway 36 side that just has amazing flow that works really well at 60-65mph You have enough passing lanes to get around the slowpokes, and it's very lightly patrolled. Just keep your eyes open for deer (and black ice in the shady bits if you drive it closer to winter).

Check out the Three Sisters in the Hill Country. It's a beautiful ride (whether on two wheels or four) and takes around 2.5-3 hours to complete.

Closer to "home", you could take Bandera Road from 1604 out to Bandera, turn right at the stop light just inside the town, and continue on past the apple orchards. Eventually you'll end up in some seriously twisty road that will lead you back to IH-10 and it's a quick ride back home.

I only lived in that area for a short two years, but I drove that road a bunch of times both on my motorcycle and in my WRX. There is a little stretch of RT 36 from Woodland, GA to Thomaston, GA. Nice sweeping corners with fantastic banking, great elevation changes and newly paved in the last couple of years.

Veterans/Farmdale Rd between East Peoria and Morton, Illinois. 5 miles of mostly empty blacktop with high speed curves, decreasing radius corners, and elevation changes, including a spot where you can easily get 6 feet of air over train tracks if you're not careful. It's this one here, coming from the opposite direction.

Kinja'd!!!

It's pretty dangerous and reckless to make runs during the spring and summer because foliage and corn block the views of the corner exits, and doing it in winter on anything less than a snowmobile is suicide, but mid- to late fall is awesome.

Before I moved from WV to TX, this was always my "go to" road. It's a short drive, but it's very lightly patrolled once you're outside of Gauley Bridge and Anstead, has several scenic overlooks along the way and even has a country store and restaurant smack dab in the middle. To top things off, it has a 55 MPH speed limit throughout. Most of the corners are tight enough that, as a motorcycle rider, I could keep my knee welded to the pavement and never exceed the speed limit. I remember getting many dirty looks from the occasional state trooper going the other way around a corner with me scraping my knee slider the whole way.

Cottonwood Pass Colorado. Open only in the summer months, due to heavy snow fall, this pass crosses the continental divide at 12,126 ft. What makes this pass unique is that the east side is paved, and well banked I may add.

(16 mi, 4100 ft elevation gain, max grade 10%, avg. grade 4.1%)

while the west is still dirt, and with tighter switchbacks.

(13.5 mi, 2700 ft elevation gain, max grade 8%, avg. grade 3.8%)

I just got back from snowboarding in Alpe d'Huez in France, and the road up the mountain to this place was phenomenal. It's used as a stage for the Tour De France every year, and the road itself looks like the Nurburgring as it's covered in graffiti all the way up.

Hands down the best thing about this road was that about a half hour before we arrived there I had stuck Fleetwood Mac's seminal "Rumours" album on. As I got to the bottom of this road "The Chain" started playing, and as anyone who loves the Mac should know, this was the Formula 1 theme song for years! Firing up this road in a rental car with the Formula 1 theme song blasting? Yes please!

If you're around the South East Wisconsin region, the Holy Hill/Kettle Moraine area is prime driving. Motorcyclists have known this forever, but we've driven it for a few years with friends. Hills, curves, narrow two lane (and sometimes barely that), blind turns, and some great little taverns and resteraunts around the way. We stop at the Basilica about mid point for a stop, check, chat, and view atop the hill.

I recently discovered this path, unfortunately google doesn't recognize one of the roads as being a road so it wouldn't let me connect the circuit. It takes about 2 hours to drive it non stop but its awesome. Change in elevation from 2k to about 8k feet, lots of turns and mountain side driving, and forest fire burn area. It has hardly any traffic so its good for having some fun. The only problem I ran in to is there is no cell phone reception so if you blow a tire like I did the other night, you're kind of screwed unless you have a full kit.

I haven't done too much mountain traveling but I did go visit my friend in NC last year, and decided to drag the route off the highway on what looked like some curvy roads, and did I ever pick right.

I ended up on WV-10 for quite a long time, and besides the occasional town you have to pass through its 148 miles of twisty mountainous bends with a 55mph speed limit.

There's a section in it that's a few miles of steep, uphill hairpins as you climb the mountain. It was kinda rough in a Jeep pulling a trailer, would be awesome in a GTI / Mini / Etc though.

People are going to hate on the Dragon. So, I'll be the first to back you up. It is an awesome road! Not because it's fast (it's not), not because it's safe (it's not), but because it can test the absolute limit of your car while going 50 or less. It's almost like an AutoX road course. Forget about going there on a pretty day in the warmth of the summer. Go at sunrise on a weekday before the Harley riders are out of the bed and you'll be one of few real drivers out there having fun. The police have a reputation for busting tons of people, but the truth is that you can drive up to 55mph without a ticket (most places on the road you cant even handle it that fast) and they will not write a ticket unless you are across the yellow line, drifting, or super loud/obnoxious. It's a great road!

In Western Montana, when I have an early morning drive on the mind I really enjoy this little loop, well maintained rural highways, classic Montana scenery, a couple of fun mountain passes, and very little in the way of the 5-Oh. Sometimes I bring my fly rod when the inspiration strikes. Route 271 between Helmsville and Drummond in the same vicinity is also a great variation. There are generally a lot of good driving roads in this part of the state.

Route 10 from Piseco, NY to Johnstown, NY is just about the best road I've ever driven on. Twisty, slightly banked corners + almost 0 population = driving heaven.

Map: Route 10, NY

M119 near the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. It's called "the tunnel of trees" and is super fun! It overlooks Lake Michigan and there is great food at the end.

It's easy to build into a bigger journey, since it runs along the axis of the Atlas mountains; you have bigger cities like Marrakech to the north and west, and interesting desert routes are to the south and east.

All these roads around Cheaha State Park in Alabama. Twisty, bendy and bouncy with no cars, bikes or cops on them. A great alternative to the Dragons Tail for Atlantans.

Found video on a bike. Crappy quality, and the camera in no way does the steepness justice, but gives you a good idea.

The closest thing we have to a fun road in the 5 boroughs would be (in my opinion) Manor Rd in Staten Island. Begin by climbing up Lighthouse Hill, admire the 10 million dollar houses you're surrounded by, shoot down the hill and enjoy the short burst of twists and turns through the forest.

Soo many choices from California. Mount Hamilton Road and down the backside on San Antonio Valley Road, east of San Jose, is an epic drive. Minarets Road out of North Fork, CA into the Sierras is gorgeous and a ton of fun to drive. Highway 96 from I-5 near the Oregon border to Highway 299...just did that about 6 weeks ago and oh, my, god. It was transcendental! Nacimiento-Ferguson Road connecting Highway 1 to Highway 101 on the Central Coast, absolutely nobody on it and wow, just a romp up and over the rugged coast ranges. And there are so, so many more. There's something about the terrain in California that just makes people build wonderful roads, and they're all over the place. Now that I live in Washington state, friends tell me they have a "great road" and it's a joke, really. A great road in WA is about as good as the road you take TO the great road in CA.

Absaroka Beartooth Highway between Yellowstone and Red Lodge, MT.

Charles Kuralt claimed it the most beautiful piece of road in North America. I'm inclined to believe him.

Since I am almost always with my kids in tow I don't spend much time attacking twisty roads.

That said, I do remember that time when the CHP officer was very crossed about my "spirited driving" through this particular route one late afternoon (this was pre-fatherhood).

I also fondly remember the drive up to Big Bear, loved those roads!

Rte 33 from Rt 29 out to Elkins, WV. The section east of Skyline Drive is amazing as is the section on either side of the WV border. I've seen quite a few lines of Ferarris, Lambos, motos, Vipers, etc cruising the area. Amazing country, twisty as all hell, banjo-playing and remote. Great mountain biking down there too...

For anyone who lives in or near Ontario: print out this map and put it on your wall:

84's a start, but there are at least a half a dozen other roads that are better right next to it. Alpine Road coming down from 35 is amazing, Pescadero Creek Road is great, Stage Road is great (albeit bumpy). You can easily add Page Mill from 35 to 280 to that stretch. I used to love coming up 9 to 35, down Alpine, then to Pescadero Creek, up Stage, and back across to 280 via Page Mill as a really fun loop.
